Austin-East Urban Youth Garden

Transforming school landscapes into living classrooms, cultivating food sovereignty and environmental stewardship

Ecological Justice & Student Education

School gardens grow food sovereignty today and the earth stewards of tomorrow

The Austin-East Urban Youth Garden at Austin-East Magnet High School addresses the interconnected challenges of food insecurity, ecological disconnection, and educational engagement.

Designed using permaculture principles, the garden integrates native perennials, productive vegetable beds, and pollinator-supporting plants in a system that demonstrates regenerative practices while producing nutritious food.

The garden serves as a learning laboratory where students engage in hands-on activities that connect them to ecological cycles and agricultural knowledge. Through direct participation in soil preparation, planting, maintenance, and harvesting, students develop both practical skills and a deeper understanding of food systems dynamics.

Each seed planted in the Austin-East Urban Youth Garden represents not just potential food production but the cultivation of ecological awareness, food sovereignty, and community resilience in an urban educational setting.
