Seedball the Coastline
Rebuilding resilient ecosystems after
extreme weather disasters
Seeding nature's restorative power
One seedball at a time, communities cultivate resilience against rising tides
Seedball the Coastline was a campaign to mobilize community members to restore eroded coastal dune and pollinator habitats in Rockaway Park, Queens and Staten Island, New York eroded by Hurricane Sandy floods.
With the help of the Lower East Side Girls Club and the Museum of Modern Art, Seedball the Coastline planted 20,000+ perennial sea grass-based seed balls designed to stabilize dune habitat that was badly eroded during the storm.
A group of Brooklyn residents worked to restore lost honey bee habitat by planting 5,000+ seed balls with red clover, wildflowers, and field peas at the base of street trees in Brooklyn’s Zone A Flood Zone, which represents 25% of all New York City homeowners.
