McKinley Park

Reimagining a 79-acre urban park through stormwater management to enhance biodiversity, watershed resilience, transport hubs, housing and vacant urban spaces

Our Cities Are Not Separate From Nature

A blueprint for the biodiverse, resilient cities of tomorrow

McKinley Park is a 79-acre community park in the heart of Pittsburgh. With its steep topography and history of erosion and flooding, the park is being transformed as a multifunctional ecosystem.

Sarah Baxendell of ArtEcology served on the Design Advisory Committee and led public outreach efforts for both the Haberman Corridor Master Plan and McKinley Park Master Plan, helping to ensure community voices shaped the transformation vision. Flood-prone areas are evolving into natural water management systems through stormwater design, nurturing the Saw Mill Run watershed, a critical focus for Pittsburgh's water authorities. Stormwater management isn’t just about fixing erosion or preventing floods, it can enhance biodiversity, restore wildlife habitats, and improve the recreational experience of park goers. The adjacent Haberman Corridor is being reimagined as a green artery and pedestrian corridor pumping life into the adjacent neighborhood by connecting McKinley Park to a transport hub.

Underused spaces like adjacent housing, vacant lots, paths, steps, and forgotten alleys, are being reintegrated, creating a vibrant, connected urban space. It's catalyzing housing rehabilitation and creating new recreation opportunities. This isn't just a park renovation; it's a reimagining of what urban life can be. Every park, every street, and every neighborhood is an opportunity to cultivate a more connected world.
