Seedball the Coastline

Mobilizing communities to restore coastal dune and pollinator habitats eroded by Hurricane Sandy floods in Queens and Staten Island, NYC. Rebuilding resilient ecosystems after climate disasters.

New York's coastal resilience: seeding nature's restorative power

Seedball the Coastline was a campaign to restore eroded coastal dune habitat in Rockaway Park, Queens and Staten Island, New York that occurred as a result of Hurricane Sandy floodwaters. With the help of the Lower East Side Girls Club and the Museum of Modern Art, Seedball the Coastline planted 20,000+ perennial sea grass based seed balls designed to stabilize dune habitat that was badly eroded during the storm.

A group of Brooklyn residents worked to restore lost honey bee habitat by planting 5,000+ seed balls with red clover, wildflowers, and field peas at the base of street trees in Brooklyn’s Zone A Flood Zone, which represents 25% of all New York City homeowners.
